SURPRISES

Life may be full of surprises, it's true.
It lifts us on pinions to soar in the blue.
It dashes our hopes and drowns us in sorrow,
Inspires us today and defeats us tomorrow.

Yet, what are these contrasts, these weird contradictions?
They're really no more than illusory fictions.
They gain our attention through subtle device
Of hypnotic persuasion and unpublished price.

They seem to be normal from what we observe
In the way of perception through optical nerve.
But what of the fact that our mind supersedes
What the ego interprets as evil misdeeds?

Mind makes its own life, its own heaven and earth.
Creates its own vision of man's innate worth
As the image of God, Who has caused us to be,
To extend His dominion to all that we see.
