PETER

                                III

(Mark 1:20-36)
He taught us healing first of all, said it wasn't optional
For those who follow in "The Way"
To heal sickness when they pray — to know
The truth in spite of what they see.
He never taught with empty words. His example undergirds
The Christian healings we perform.
But only as our prayers conform to truth
And emulate his piety.
I still recall the day he spent at my house. The incident
Is fixed within my memory,
While members of my family remind
Me of the peace that he bestows.
The mother of my wife was ill, sick with fever and a chill
Which kept her laid upon her bed the day that Jesus visited, but he
Rebuked the fever and she rose.
She ministered to all the guests, meeting everyone's requests
For food and drink or just a place
To rest and find some breathing space before
Continuing our ministry.
When evening came and day was gone, many in the town were drawn,
Who brought their sick and those possessed
To Jesus in a hopeful quest that he
Would make them whole and set them free.
He laid his hands on every one, this humble, holy, blessed Son
Of God, and all their ills were healed.
We saw the sin and sickness yield to truth.
And this is what we have to do
If we would save the invalid, healing them as Jesus did.
We have to know the truth instead
Of letting Satan fill our head with lies
About the man that God foreknew.
